Naphtha is used to dissolve other substances, which is why it can be used to clean metal.

As a Diluent

Naphtha is used as a fuel for camp stoves and as a solvent (diluent) for paint.

As a Solvent

Naphtha is used as dry-cleaning solvents and solvent for industrial extraction processes.
