Coal is a black or brownish-black sedimentary rock that can be burned for fuel and used to generate electricity.
- It is composed mostly of carbon and hydrocarbons, which contain energy that can be released through combustion (burning).
- Coal contains the energy stored by plants that lived hundreds of millions of years ago in swampy forests. Coal is mostly carbon with variable amounts of other elements, chiefly hydrogen, sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen.

Metallurgical (coking) coal is a key ingredient in steelmaking. Coal converted to coke is used to produce around 70% of the world's steel
Generates Electricity
The heat produced by the combustion of the coal is used to convert water into high-pressure steam, which drives a turbine, which produces electricity.
Source of Energy
